daylight overdraft

An occurrence in which a bank makes a transfer of funds that temporarily causes a negative reserve position. Money transfer activities constantly are monitored by the central bank which will provide a bank in a negative reserve position with a short-term loan to cover the deficiency. Multiple occurrences could lead to the bank being placed on "troubled bank" status.
