chemical oxygen demand (COD)

A method for testing water quality by measuring the amount of organic compounds, or pollution, in a sample of water taken from a lake or river. COD measures the amount of oxygen consumed by contaminants in a solution of boiling potassium dichromate. Expressed as parts per million, the higher the COD of the sample, the higher the level of pollution.
