fail position

Circumstances that indicate a failure to deliver securities to a broker so that the broker can redistribute the securities to his or her buying brokers. A fail position may also occur if a broker fails to pay another broker for securities. Fail positions are identified by looking at the amount of pending sell and buy transactions of the middle broker's portfolio. If a broker has more sell transactions than buy it typically indicates a fail position.
