general order

U.S. Customs Service rule that imported goods not taken delivery of (cleared) within 15 days of arrival will be removed from the arrival warehouse to a general order warehouse at the expense and risk of the importer (the consignee). If those goods, referred to as general order merchandise, are not cleared within 6 months of their arrival, they will be auctioned, donated, or disposed of by the government.
