In the US, the UK and some other countries, a corporation can distribute cash to existing shareholders to repurchase its own stuck for a fraction of the outstanding equity of the company. US corporate law provides five methods of stock repurchase: private negotiations, open market, repurchase put rights, fixed price tender offer and Dutch auctions.
