vertical market system (VMS)

A distribution channel established, formally or informally, through separate businesses or business units in which the activities involved in the production and distribution of products are coordinated among the channel participants. A VMS can be established through a corporate owned group of businesses or a group of independently operated companies where all seek to maximize profits through a coordinated system of production, marketing and sales.
