An investment trust consisting of a fixed portfolio of assets such as mortgages or commodities that is held by an intermediary and sold as shares to individual investors. Shareholders share in the income and profit/loss activity of the underlying assets. An example of a WHFIT is a commodity trust such as SPDR Gold Trust. Also called Widely Held Mortgage Trust (WHMT) and Non-Mortgage Widely Held Fixed Investment Trust (NMWHFIT).
