business impact analysis (BIA)

An in depth assessment of an organization's capacity to continue operations in the face of specific risks as it pertains to critical business functions. A BIA is typically performed to assess the impact of a particular project or policy decision that can expose the business to internal or external risks based on possible threats to functionality or profitability.
