capital assistance program (CAP)

Program offered by the United States Department of Treasury to infuse capital in a financial institution in exchange for preferred stock options or warrants. The Department of Treasury retains these stocks and warrants until the financial institution repays the capital infusion or purchases them back from the government. The government is typically able to obtain a good return on profit if the company's stocks or warrants are lucrative.
