chain deflator

An economic indicator used to track prices of consumer products. Unlike the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the basket of goods surveyed to calculate the Chain Deflator changes periodically along with consumer buying habits. It can be highly volatile from month to month. Investors and economists look for signs of inflation by watching the trend on a quarterly basis. The Chain Deflator is a component of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report, which is in the last week of the month by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. It is reported on various financial news and research Web sites and is available at the BEA's Web site.
