mortgage putback

A situation where mortgage lenders such as banks or lending institutions are forced to refund to investors the funds they (investors) put in a mortgage by repurchasing the mortgage. This is usually as a result of discrepancies in document used in the transaction, which may be deemed to be fraudulent.
