net borrowed reserves

A weekly statistic released in the Federal Reserve data, which indicates the difference between the amounts a bank owes the Fed and the excess cash reserve (leftover of set minimum requirement) the bank has. A low bank excess reserve makes banks borrow more which increases the net borrowed reserve and this is recorded as a negative number. A high net borrowed reserve indicates a shortage of cash reserve, which then results in difficult credit environment as per high interest rates and demand for loan. Opposite of net free reserves.
