Volcker rule

Instituted as a transparency remedy following the banking meltdown in 2008, the Volcker rule sought to prohibit banks from engaging in business or investment practices that could not be monitored by the bank regulators, such as trading in proprietary accounts. The rule also seeks to eliminate conflicts of interests by preventing banks from engaging with clients as both a creditor and a financial advisor.
