FedEx to test autonomous delivery robot this summer in Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --FedEx is joining the likes of Amazon and other companies launching an autonomous robot for last-mile deliveries

According to an announcement by the company, the robot will help retailers make same-day and last-mile deliveries to customers. FedEx says more than 60% of a retailer's customers live within three miles of their establishment.

Retailers will be able to utilize the bot for orders to nearby customers that same day. FedEx is also working with AutoZone, Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart to assess retailers' autonomous delivery needs.

The bot will travel on sidewalks and along roadsides. It will be equipped with technology to make it pedestrian-safe, including multiple cameras and will compute algorithms to detect and avoid obstacles.

The bot will be tested this summer in Memphis, Tennessee and other markets.
